New to Amateur Radio?

You do not need a license or previous radio experience to join W6YL.

Amateur radio — often called ham radio — is a hobby and technical service that lets licensed operators communicate by radio while learning about electronics, antennas, radio propagation and communications technology.

Your First Visit

Come to one of our Tuesday meetings from 4:30–5:30 p.m. in Engineering 376A.

Club members can show you the station, explain the equipment and help you figure out what part of amateur radio interests you.

Getting Licensed

In the United States, amateur radio licenses are issued by the Federal Communications Commission.

The Technician license is the usual starting point for new operators.

W6YL members can help you find study resources, understand the licensing process and start getting experience with amateur radio.
